The 2026 edition of the Onion Fair in Vila Pouca de Aguiar took place on September 25th and 26th, consolidating itself as a benchmark rural and sociocultural event. The fair saw the participation of thousands of people in various activities.
On the first day, September 25th, the morning featured a showcase and sale of products, the National Wild Goat Contest, a threshing event for kindergarten children, street theater by Filandorra, and the Largest Onion Contest. The community also enjoyed tastings of products from the cooking school, onion soup, and other delicacies at local eateries. The prize for the largest onion was awarded to Jorge and Beatriz, with an onion weighing 1.281 Kg.
The afternoon of September 25th included the Livestock Contest, Sheep Showcase, and Ox Races. In the evening, the traditional 'Desfolhada à Moda Antiga' was presented by the Alvão Cultural, Recreational, and Social Association.
The second day, September 26th, was marked by the continuation of product sales and gastronomic tasting, alongside events like the Jogo do Malhão, Donkey Race, and Trotting Horse Race, which drew large crowds to the sports complex.
The fair's closing featured the Onion Ball, which this year transformed into a grand concert with Zé Amaro, his band, and dancers. The high-performance stage show attracted thousands to the center of the municipality's headquarters.
The Mayor, Ana Rita Dias, highlighted the Onion Fair as the municipality's most traditional economic and cultural event, emphasizing its value for producers, merchants, and the community in general, in both commercial and tourist aspects.
Historical documents indicate that the Aguiar fair dates back at least 700 years. Records from 1319 mention a prohibition by D. Fernando, and the fair's restitution was signed in September 1417 by D. João I.
