The Intermunicipal Community of Alto Tâmega and Barroso participated in the 5G.CONNECT event in Carrazeda de Ansiães, focusing on 5G's potential to reduce territorial inequalities and boost development.
The Intermunicipal Community of Alto Tâmega and Barroso (CIMAT) was present at the initiative 5G.CONNECT: Connecting underserved regions, held this morning at the Municipal Auditorium of Carrazeda de Ansiães. The president of CIMAT, Fátima Fernandes, and the first executive secretary, Ramiro Gonçalves, represented the entity at a meeting dedicated to connectivity and the impact of next-generation mobile networks in low-density regions.
The event included a round table on the impact of the 5G mobile network in the regions of Northern Portugal, bringing together representatives from various intermunicipal communities. They discussed possibilities for combating territorial inequalities, attracting investment, and creating new solutions for citizens, businesses, and public services.
“
"Connectivity is a structural and determining factor for the evolution of territories. The project can constitute a prototype that can be replicated, helping to eliminate areas without adequate coverage that continue to condition the development of many interior areas."
“
"The improvement of connectivity has a direct impact on access to digital services, business activity, education, health, civil protection, tourism, and the ability to attract and retain population. For Alto Tâmega and Barroso, where distances and territorial dispersion pose unique challenges, access to reliable, high-capacity networks is an important condition for ensuring equal opportunities."
The 5G.CONNECT initiative also addressed solutions applied to climate action, civil protection, advanced agriculture, geotechnical asset management, tourism, culture, and digital innovation. The project, valued at 10 million euros, is co-financed by 75% by the European Union and brings together entities such as dstelecom, irradiare, innovationpoint, dstgroup, NOS, and the CIMs of Alto Tâmega and Barroso, Douro, Tâmega e Sousa, and Terras de Trás-os-Montes, with the aim of testing and disseminating connectivity solutions in regions with lower coverage.
