The Viana do Castelo City Council and the Business Association of the District of Viana do Castelo (AEDVC) are maintaining the financial investment in Christmas lighting at 200 thousand euros, similar to previous years, but with a significant reinforcement in the number of illuminated streets. The lighting is planned for the period between November 7, 2026, and January 10, 2027.
The initiative includes the implementation of multimedia shows along the Avenida dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra, the placement of a multimedia tree in Largo de São Domingos to better distribute attractions, and the inclusion of Rua de Viana to boost traditional commerce.
Several streets will be illuminated, including Rua da Picota, Rua Manuel Espregueira, Rua da Bandeira, Passeio das Mordomas da Romaria, Rua Gago Coutinho, Rua Aurora do Lima, Rua Sacadura Cabral, Rua Mateus Barbosa, Rua S. Pedro, Rua Grande, Rua de Viana, Largo João Tomás da Costa, Largo 5 de Outubro, Rua Martim Velho, Avenida Rocha Páris, Rua Nova de Santana, Praça 1º de Maio, Avenida Conde de Carreira, Rotunda Mc Donald’s, Rotunda da Praia Norte, Rotunda Afonso III, Largo de São Domingos, Avenida Luís de Camões, Rua de Aveiro, Rua João Alves Cerqueira, Avenida Rocha Páris (North Side), Rua de Santo António (North Side), Rua do Poço, Alameda João Alves Cerqueira, Avenida dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra, Avenida Campo do Castelo, Centro Comercial Capitães de Abril, Rua Cândido dos Reis, Campo D’Agonia, Jardim D. Fernando, Capela das Almas, Largo Maestro José Pedro, and the Sé Catedral de Viana do Castelo.
On the main Avenue, Christmas ornamentation with elements synchronized with music will be installed, creating daily multimedia shows. A giant illuminated 3D Christmas tree will be placed in Largo de São Domingos, also featuring multimedia shows and festive elements.
The President of the Viana do Castelo City Council, Luís Nobre, highlighted that the initiative aims to boost and revitalize local commerce during November, December, and January, enhancing the municipality's Christmas entertainment program and making the city a reference point for visitors.
The design and operation of the lighting elements will consider reducing energy consumption, using LED luminaires and limiting their operating periods.
The protocol aims for financial support from the Municipality of Viana do Castelo for actions to stimulate the business and commercial structure of the urban center during the Christmas and New Year period, with execution by the Business Association of the District of Viana do Castelo.
