The Municipality of Melgaço, in partnership with the National Express Network (Rede Nacional de Expressos), has announced the reinforcement of road links starting from November 1, 2026, with new schedules that will daily connect the municipality to cities such as Viana do Castelo, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, and Santarém.

From the stipulated date, new schedules will come into effect, aiming to meet the mobility needs of Melgaço's residents. This measure follows the recent loss of morning connections to Porto, which had hindered access to essential services.
The Mayor of Melgaço, José Albano Domingues, expressed satisfaction with the new connections, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the population is not isolated and has access to fundamental services, particularly in healthcare. "We have worked actively and tirelessly over the past few months to negotiate an effective alternative, and Rede Nacional de Expressos has proven to be a fundamental strategic partner," he stated.
The new routes have been designed to address the needs of those who require access to major urban centers during useful hours, allowing them to arrive in the cities in the morning and have sufficient time for appointments and commitments. The mayor urges the population to make regular use of the new connections to ensure their sustainability.
Rede de Expressos thus reinforces its role as a driver of decentralization and territorial cohesion, keeping mobility channels open for low-density areas.
The service will be available daily, including weekends and holidays, with departures from Melgaço at 06:15 and 16:00, and arrivals in the municipality at 14:30 and 22:05. Destinations include Monção, Valença, Vila Nova de Cerveira, Caminha, Vila Praia de Âncora, and Viana do Castelo locally, and Esposende, Póvoa de Varzim, Porto (Airport and Campanhã), Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, and Santarém nationally.
Tickets can be purchased in person at the Melgaço Transport Coordination Center or through the operator's official portal at www.rede-expressos.pt. Full schedules are available for online consultation.
