The Obstetrics department of the Alto Minho Local Health Unit (ULSAM) marked Breastfeeding Week, this year themed «Breastfeeding for a sustainable start to life. Strengthening what works». The initiative aimed to create a space for welcome and sharing, valuing breastfeeding and the role of families, health professionals, and the community in promoting a healthy start to life.
Throughout the week, the department was decorated with messages related to the theme, highlighting the importance of the bond between mother and baby, family, health professionals, and the community. «Love and Care Diplomas» and «Breastfeeding Diplomas» were awarded to mothers and babies as recognition. The program also included moments of artistic expression and reflection to raise awareness about different ways of feeding and caring with love.
The initiative also sought to convey a message of inclusion and respect for each mother's individual experiences, acknowledging that breastfeeding is not always an easy path. One of the central messages reinforced that care, affection, and well-being are fundamental in all motherhood experiences, regardless of milk volume.
ULSAM thanked the families for their participation and the dedication of the Obstetrics Nursing team in organizing the activities.
