The Caminha Municipal Building hosted, last Saturday, the inauguration of the exhibition "José Porto: Arquitetura e Memória". The initiative, promoted by the Municipality of Caminha, brought together dozens of people, highlighting the significant interest in the work and legacy of a prominent figure in Portuguese architecture. The exhibition will be accessible to the public until November 27th.
The opening session featured speeches by the Mayor of Caminha, Liliana Silva, and architect Susana Hermenegildo, from the Northern Regional Section of the Order of Architects. Subsequently, researchers and specialists Paulo Vila Verde, José Pedro Tenreiro, Fernando Cerqueira Barros, and Paulo Torres Bento shared various perspectives on José Porto's life and work, emphasizing the importance of his contributions to architectural history and the formation of collective memory.
Complementing the conference, the exhibition offers a journey that connects the research on José Porto with the documentary collection of the Municipal Archive. The displayed material includes 19 panels from the original 2003 exhibition, coordinated by Paulo Bento, works by Paulo Vila Verde focusing on José Porto's architecture, and several architectural projects from the municipal archive.
The objectives of this initiative are to showcase the municipality's documentary heritage and to highlight the role of archives as guardians of collective memory, valuing documents as fundamental testimonies for understanding the territory's history, identity, and development.
Curated by Paulo Vila Verde and Catarina Dias, the exhibition can be visited from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. On Saturdays, the hours are from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
