The municipality's application was approved, planning the study and implementation of proximity urbanism measures. A key highlight is the creation of a riverside green corridor adapted to the needs of the elderly, developed with active community participation.
The approval was announced by councilor Pedro Vieira at the City Council meeting on October 28. Montijo's participation represents an estimated investment of approximately 110,000 euros, with 65% co-financing, as part of the network's overall budget of nearly one million euros.
The initiative aims to test real-world solutions that contribute to more accessible and inclusive public spaces. This includes implementing inclusive furniture, removing architectural barriers, and enhancing collective memory in the historic center.
“"We will test real solutions on the ground, inclusive furniture, elimination of architectural barriers, and reactivation of our collective memory in the historic center."
The process will involve the elderly, young people, students, and local merchants, ensuring community participation in identifying needs and developing solutions to be tested.
Montijo joins the network alongside cities such as Novi Sad (Serbia), Olomouc (Czech Republic), Bistrița (Romania), Geel (Belgium), Nicosia (Cyprus), and Turin (Italy), selected from over 90 applications involving 600 European cities.
The councilor emphasized that "Montijo is at the forefront of urban innovation in Europe." Participation in HERI+AGE will strengthen cooperation and experience sharing among European cities, contributing to the development of local responses that promote accessibility, participation, and territorial valorization.
