The sessions, held in six primary schools within the municipality (Sarilhos Pequenos, Barra Cheia, Penteado, Rosário, Gaio, and Chão Duro), used a pop-up book and the game “O Almoço da Minhoca” (The Worm's Lunch) to teach students the principles of composting and reinforce general recycling knowledge, aiming to increase children's environmental literacy.
In parallel, the campaign offering home composters, ongoing since September, is part of the “RecolhaBio – Support for the implementation of domestic composting in the municipality of Moita” program, funded by the Environmental Fund. Interested residents can request a free composter via the Waste Green Line (800 210 633) or email div.residamburb@cm-moita.pt.
Home composting naturally transforms organic waste, such as fruit peels and dry leaves, into a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer called compost. Key advantages include waste reduction, obtaining free fertilizer for pots, vegetable gardens, and gardens, and promoting healthier, more sustainable eating.
Along with the composter, the Municipal Chamber also provides a composting manual to participating residents and will organize further training opportunities in horticulture and composting as part of its regular environmental awareness activities.
