Tejo Ambiente has secured approval for a €5.2 million project to renovate the Alto Nabão Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Ourém, aimed at protecting the Nabão River.

The project, approved under the Sustentável 2030 program, receives a €4.4 million contribution from the Cohesion Fund. The intervention seeks to improve wastewater treatment, strengthen the infrastructure's capacity, and reduce pressure on the water quality of the Nabão River.
The overall investment, exceeding €5.2 million, is dedicated to enhancing water resource protection and improving the sanitation system's performance. The operation focuses on the renovation, rehabilitation, and modernization of the WWTP, increasing its response capacity and treatment efficiency. Biological treatment will be updated, existing structures and equipment will be refurbished, monitoring and control systems will be reinforced, and solid phase management will be improved.
This intervention, based on leveraging existing infrastructure, will contribute to increasing the WWTP's efficiency, reliability, and sustainability, improving the quality of treated effluent, and reducing pressure on the water environment, thereby safeguarding the Nabão basin.
The renovation is strategic for the protection of the Nabão River, classified as a sensitive area, which mandates stringent standards for wastewater treatment and discharge to preserve water quality and associated ecosystems.
The operation, deemed a priority under PENSAARP 2030 and with a favorable opinion from the Portuguese Environment Agency, benefits from an 85% co-financing rate. Completion is scheduled for May 31, 2029.
