Marked on October 28th, the World Day of the Elderly is an opportunity to reinforce the importance of social responses that promote dignified, active, and safe aging, combating isolation and valuing the role of older adults in the community. In Póvoa de Varzim, the Municipality focuses on proximity responses that aim to support the senior population in various aspects of their lives, promoting well-being, autonomy, and social participation.
In this context, the “Cuidar com Amor” project currently supports 101 elderly individuals in the municipality through home care and teleassistance services. Home care is provided by a multidisciplinary team (psychologist, gerontologist, and social worker), focused on beneficiaries' needs to promote emotional and social well-being, autonomy, and quality of life. Teleassistance enhances the safety of the elderly 24 hours a day.
The Municipality's commitment also extends to its Occupational Centers, which serve over 130 elderly individuals across five locations in different parishes. These centers offer opportunities for social interaction, sharing, and building connections, playing a crucial role in combating loneliness and social isolation, and fostering a true support network and sense of belonging.
Through these initiatives, the Municipality of Póvoa de Varzim reinforces its commitment to a close-knit social policy, integrating individual support, home safety, and community participation. The message for World Day of the Elderly is clear: investing in aging is investing in people, relationships, and a more supportive community.
