The application of the new directives coincides with the restriction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as ‘forever chemicals’, in packaging intended for direct food contact. These substances, frequently used in fast food and takeaway containers for their repellent properties, will be excluded from the market if they do not meet the newly defined limits, due to their adverse impact on health and the environment.
The new Regulation establishes a unified framework for the packaging lifecycle across the European Union. The aim is to increase the efficiency and compliance of businesses, encouraging innovation and investment in circular solutions, aligned with climate neutrality objectives.
Producers and importers of food will face new information requirements to ensure product traceability. The European Union foresees an initial transitional period to facilitate adaptation, allowing the clearance of existing stock of packaging produced under previous rules without penalty.
From 2028, a harmonized packaging labeling system will be implemented to optimize waste sorting by consumers and improve recycling efficiency. Additional measures include limits on empty spaces in packaging, restrictions on single-use packaging, and reinforced targets for recycled plastic use, with mandatory application from 2030.
The European Commission provides practical guidelines and a clarification document to assist businesses in transitioning to these new standards.
