The Camisola Poveira has been officially registered in the European Union, obtaining legal protection as an artisanal and industrial product with Geographical Indication.

The Camisola Poveira has achieved a significant milestone by being officially registered within the European Union's legal framework for artisanal and industrial products. This protection grants the product recognition and safeguards it at a community level against imitations and counterfeits.
This registration, following its certification as a product with Protected Geographical Indication in September 2022, reinforces the commitment of the Póvoa de Varzim Municipal Council to preserving an art form over 150 years old. The authenticity and origin of the sweater are thus rendered unquestionable.
The new European system for protecting artisanal and industrial heritage for geographical indications aims to safeguard products whose quality, reputation, and characteristics are intrinsically linked to their geographical origin. The Camisola Poveira now benefits from this protection, defending local artisans and the product in the European market.
The inscription acknowledges the direct link between quality, traditional techniques, and the region of origin, providing a seal of authenticity guarantee. The official designation is now that of a product with “Geographical Indication in the European Union (EU)”.
This important step is part of the new European regulation on Geographical Indications for artisanal and industrial products, managed by EUIPO. The registration of the designation “Camisola Poveira – Póvoa de Varzim” within the EU's legal framework began on January 12, 2026, with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
