The evaluation process included analysis of documentation, interviews with municipal officials and local stakeholders, and visits to projects and best practices within the municipality.
Penafiel's journey in the program began in 2024 and culminated in 2026 with the completion of self-assessment, application submission, and an on-site audit. The program is based on the Green Destinations Standard, an international benchmark for tourism sustainability recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
This award recognizes the work developed in different areas of the territory, reinforcing Penafiel's commitment to a more sustainable and responsible tourism development model. The aim is to value natural resources, cultural heritage, and local identity.
The Municipality intends to continue this path, deepening sustainability practices and strengthening collaboration with businesses, local entities, and the community, contributing to the enhancement of Penafiel as a responsible tourist destination.
