The initiative aims to develop a common agenda in the areas of sexual health and well-being, based on knowledge production, advanced training, innovation, and social impact. The charter was signed by 30 institutions: 25 national entities and five international organizations.
The signatory entities recognize the importance of sexual health, sexual well-being, and sexual rights as fundamental dimensions of health, human dignity, and sustainable development. They support the creation of the International Institute for Sexual Health and Well-being, an international platform dedicated to promoting scientific excellence, education, innovation, international cooperation, and knowledge transfer in these domains.
The Institute is seen as a reference structure for the development and articulation of initiatives, providing an adequate institutional framework for the World Observatory on Sexual Health, a strategic partnership between the University of Porto and the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS). This observatory's mission is to promote the production, monitoring, and dissemination of scientific knowledge on sexual health globally.
By signing the charter, the entities align themselves with the principles and objectives guiding the Institute's creation, expressing their support for its development and recognizing its potential to strengthen knowledge production and dissemination, international cooperation, and the promotion of sexual health.
Among the signatory international organizations are the World Association for Sexual Health, the University of São Paulo, the Eduardo Mondlane University, KU Leuven, and the American University of Beirut. The full list includes various Portuguese Professional Orders, Scientific Societies, Research Institutes, and Civil Society Organizations.
