The initiative, covering births or adoptions since January 1, 2026, allows families to benefit even if the event occurred before the program's effective date. "Baião Primeiros Passos" replaces the previous "KitBebé_Baião" and fulfills a commitment by the current municipal executive.
The Mayor of Baião, Ana Raquel Azevedo, highlighted the fulfillment of a commitment to citizens and the intention to transform promises into concrete actions. "We have no time to lose, and that is why we work every day to turn our commitments into tangible responses for the people," she stated.
Azevedo emphasized that the program was designed not only as financial aid but also to address various challenges in the municipality, encouraging families to stay and build their future in Baião. "We want to support those who choose Baião to live, start a family, and raise their children. We want to give more reasons to stay and build a future here," she said.
The initiative also aims to stimulate the local economy. By requiring eligible expenses to be made within the municipality, the financial support translates into investment in Baião's commerce. "We wanted this support to also impact our economy. The €1,200 is spent in local businesses, thus supporting our families and our merchants simultaneously," the mayor concluded.
Support is provided through expense reimbursement, with multiple claims possible up to the limit of €1,200 per child. Each claim must include eligible invoices totaling at least €300. Expenses covered include health, food, hygiene, childcare, furniture, and children's clothing and footwear, provided they are purchased from establishments within the municipality.
The Councillor for Social Cohesion, Olívia Mendes, stressed the importance of ensuring that information reaches all eligible families. Dissemination will occur at various points in the municipality, including health services, to reach families during pregnancy and after the child's birth. "We want to ensure that no family eligible for this support misses out due to lack of knowledge," she explained.
Applications are now open for families with children born or adopted from January 1, 2026, provided the applicant has been registered in the municipality of Baião for over a year. Applications can be submitted online at cm-baiao.pt or in person at the GAF – Gabinete de Apoio à Família.
