The initiative, set to begin in the coming days, covers approximately 26.5 kilometers of waterways, focusing on minimizing flood effects, combating erosion, and improving the environment through nature-based solutions and natural engineering.
The public information session, held last Friday, October 9th, was attended by Mayor Ana Raquel Azevedo, along with other council members and technicians. Environmental Engineer Pedro Teiga detailed the planned works, including riverbed cleaning, invasive species removal, and bank stabilization.
The project, 75% funded by community funds from Norte 2030, includes the creation of preferential flood zones to temporarily retain water, reducing flow and discharge speed. Land is also being acquired for this purpose and for the installation of monitoring equipment.
Ana Raquel Azevedo highlighted the intervention's importance for preventing damage to homes and agricultural land, given the risks of extreme weather events. "We must continue to repair the damage, but also invest today to avoid bigger problems tomorrow," she stated.
The Teixeira River is part of a Significant Potential Flood Risk Area. The project involves installing meteorological and hydrological stations, video surveillance systems, and other measures to anticipate risk situations, as well as actions for habitat and biodiversity recovery.
