The initiative, part of the municipal strategy to promote animal welfare and responsible ownership, aims to reduce unwanted litters, decrease abandonment cases, and control the stray animal population in the municipality.
The program is for residents of Amarante who own dogs and cats aged six months or older and of reproductive age. Animals must have electronic identification. For dogs, valid rabies vaccination and licenses are required. Each household can apply for the sterilization of only one animal.
Sterilizations will be carried out at participating Veterinary Medical Care Centers (CAMV) within the municipality, using free vouchers provided by the Municipality to eligible candidates. The campaign is limited by the available funding of 10,000 euros.
Applications require prior appointment via phone at 914 108 221, 914 680 642, or 914 108 161, during weekdays between 09:00 and 12:00. At the time of application, dogs must be accompanied by their owners for weighing. Proof of residence in Amarante, health booklet, and animal identification documents must be presented, including a valid license for dogs.
Through this measure, the council reinforces its commitment to preventing abandonment, reducing uncontrolled reproduction, and promoting animal welfare by encouraging responsible ownership practices.
