The Thematic Route of the Bastioned Fortresses of the Border (RFAR), which links Almeida, Marvão, and Valença, has strengthened international cooperation with Italy through a technical exchange focused on enhancing fortified heritage.

In January, an exchange initiative took place between the RFAR technical team and the managers of the Venetian Fortresses project, aiming to enhance the route's positioning as an excellent tourist-cultural product, boost its international dimension, and promote the sharing of experiences and cultural cooperation between Portugal and Italy.
This initiative, which seeks to consolidate and densify the Thematic Route of the Bastioned Fortresses of the Border, included a study visit, promotion, and communication to three benchmark Italian examples: Bergamo, Peschiera del Garda, and Palmanova.
Now, between October 12th and 15th, the technical team of the Venetian Fortresses, accompanied by Marco Valle, consultant and head of the respective candidacy dossier, visited Marvão, Almeida, and Valença. The objective was to share knowledge and reflect on strategies for enhancing and managing the bastioned heritage.
This initiative represents another step in strengthening cooperation between Portugal and Italy, consolidating the Route of the Bastioned Fortresses of the Border as a reference in the valorization of fortified heritage through research, conservation, cultural mediation, and the promotion of an international project.
