The Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection, Micaela Fonseca de Freitas, participated in the opening of the Senior Medical School, in Santa Maria Maior, Funchal, which runs until October 23.

The initiative, developed in partnership between the Regional Secretariat for Health and Civil Protection and the NOVA Medical School, aims to empower seniors, promote health literacy, and encourage active aging.
Micaela Fonseca de Freitas emphasized that increased longevity must be accompanied by meaning, autonomy, and happiness, arguing that retirement should be a new starting point where accumulated wisdom and experience continue to play a fundamental role in society.
The Senior Medical School embodies this vision through an intensive week of shared learning and intergenerational proximity, featuring practical sessions, screenings, advice on chronic disease management, culinary medicine, and cultural activities.
The project is supported financially by the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation, through BPI.
