The Orthopedics Department of SESARAM has ushered in a new era of healthcare in the Autonomous Region of Madeira with the performance of its first robotic-assisted surgeries. The recently acquired Mako SmartRobotics system is being used for total and partial knee replacement and total hip replacement procedures.
This technology enables more rigorous surgical planning and more precise execution, tailored to the individual needs of each patient. During the intervention, the robotic arm provides real-time guidance and control mechanisms, including the creation of virtual boundaries to assist teams in making bone cuts within the planned area, ensuring greater accuracy and preserving adjacent anatomical structures.
It is important to note that the robotic system functions as an advanced support tool, with the surgeon maintaining full control of the procedure and responsibility for all clinical decisions. The technology enhances the experience and competence of healthcare professionals.
The introduction of this system represents a significant advancement in modernizing healthcare in the Region and strengthening the response capacity of the Orthopedics Department. It reflects SESARAM's commitment to technological innovation, the qualification of clinical teams, and the continuous improvement of service quality provided to the population of Madeira.
The acquisition of this technology, valued at €3,407,027.17, was supported by FEDER, Portugal 2030, and the European Union, under the 'Acquisition of Hospital Equipment' operation (code M2030-FEDER-03461000).
