This procedure follows the amendment to the Legal Regime of Higher Education Institutions (RJIES), introduced by Law no. 32/2026, of July 20th. The new legislation mandates higher education institutions to approve new statutes within one year.
At the University of Lisbon, the responsibility for approving the new Statutes will fall to a Statutory Assembly. This assembly will comprise the Rector, elected representatives from career faculty and researchers, students, and technical, specialist, and management staff, as well as co-opted external personalities.
The university's General Council recently approved the regulation for the formation of this Assembly. Subsequently, the Rector signed the dispatch convening the electoral process and establishing the corresponding calendar, with the electoral act set for November 24th and 25th.
