In September, the area of responsibility of the Lisbon MRCC recorded 38 maritime incidents, with 33 people saved. In parallel, the Ponta Delgada MRCC coordinated 4 search and rescue operations. In Funchal, the Sub-center for Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination also coordinated 4 operations, which led to the rescue of 2 individuals.
Throughout the entire period from January to September 2026, the Portuguese Navy was involved in 359 rescue operations. These actions were crucial for ensuring the safety of 348 lives at sea.
The success of the maritime search and rescue system is ensured by the collaboration of various entities. In addition to the resources of the Navy and the National Maritime Authority, assets from the Portuguese Air Force (FAP) and other organizations integrated into the Auxiliary Structure of the National Search and Rescue System are deployed. These include the National Institute for Medical Emergencies (INEM CODU-MAR), National and Regional Civil Protection and Firefighter Services, Maritime and Port Authorities, and the Coastal Traffic Control System, among other bodies.
The fundamental support provided by merchant ships and fishing vessels is also noteworthy. They divert from their commercial routes and interrupt their professional activities to provide assistance, always coordinated by the National Centers - MRCC Lisbon and MRCC Ponta Delgada.
The Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centers have received national and international recognition through various awards, demonstrating their continuous commitment to safeguarding human life at sea, operating 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
