Universidade NOVA de Lisboa celebrates this Friday, October 16, World Food Day, highlighting the sustainable management of its canteens and the promotion of healthy habits.

The institution's commitment to the academic community is reflected in significant figures. Between January and September 2026, over 98,000 meals were served, following the 160,000 recorded throughout 2025 at NOVA FCT, NOVA FCSH, and the Residência Alfredo de Sousa facilities.
To optimize service, the Serviços de Ação Social da NOVA (SASNOVA) have implemented waste reduction strategies. These actions include adjusting production to actual consumption patterns, adapting portion sizes, and prioritizing seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.
The renovation and direct management of the Residência Alfredo de Sousa canteen mark the recent evolution of the infrastructure. In the future, the university plans to establish collaborations with the Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo do Estoril to innovate in gastronomic offerings and train staff teams.
As part of World Food Day, the NOVA na Cozinha initiative offers students a practical showcooking session. The goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of a balanced and affordable diet within the university context, while also providing a look behind the scenes at food hygiene and safety procedures in the institution's industrial kitchens.
