The Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (FBAUL) announced the winners of the 1st edition of the Manuel Cargaleiro Awards on October 27, 2026, during the ceremony commemorating its 190th anniversary.

Joana Paraíso, a PhD student in Fine Arts (Drawing) at FBAUL, received the 1st prize in the artistic category “Prémio Cargaleiro” for her work Na Margem. The artwork is inspired by a geometric motif from Portuguese 'calçada portuguesa' (pavement), an X inscribed in a square, found on a walk at the top of Parque Eduardo VII, which combines with the face of a female figure.
The jury, composed of artists Alexandre Farto (Vhils) and Graça Morais, and curator Sandra Vieira Jürgen, selected this work from a total of 267 entries open to artists of any age, nationality, or background.
In the Prémio Revelação (Revelation Award) category, the winner was Tomás Caleia Azul (Figueira da Foz, 2004), from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, with the work Pentatonic Scale (2025).
In the same category, two honorable mentions were awarded: to Giulia Paz, also an FBAUL student, for the textile work Viração, and to Mônica Lopes Nogueira, for Cópia da Cópia da C…, a ceramic panel reflecting on the successive reproduction of digital images.
In the Prémio Investigação (Research Award) category, former FBAUL student Rafaela Monnerat Schenkel was recognized for a project dedicated to the effect glazes in the work of Manuel Cargaleiro.
