The celebration marked not only the first year of the new Department but also Biology Day. The initiative was a moment to reflect on the long-desired fusion of structures and the importance of bridging different areas of knowledge.
At the opening, the director of CIÊNCIAS, Conceição Freitas, highlighted the collective effort to establish the Department and the importance of valuing scientific and human heritage. "Our Biology is its people," she stated, emphasizing the contribution of faculty, researchers, technicians, students, and collaborators to a dynamic academic community. She also recalled that Biology is "a science one enters and stays in out of passion."
“"Our Biology is its people"
Conceição Freitas stressed the importance of preserving community spirit and the ability to build a collective project, expressing hope that the Department will continue to strengthen its scientific relevance and train professionals for society.
The Dean of the Order of Biologists, Maria de Jesus Silva Fernandes, addressed the role of biologists in society and the challenges facing the profession. She highlighted the growing relevance of biological knowledge in areas such as the environment, health, and political decisions, stating that "the impact of Biology on the life of society today" is increasingly evident.
“"We prefer broad-spectrum biologists"
She advocated for comprehensive training for professionals and emphasized the responsibility associated with the profession, transparency, and adherence to ethical principles, reinforcing the importance of a code of ethics and a strong professional order.
The afternoon was dedicated to the relationship between science and art, exploring how art can influence the understanding of nature in a world marked by scientific advancement. Professor Ana Margarida Fortes explained that the intention was to create a moment of multidisciplinary reflection. "The biologist, after all, also needs these collaborations with all these areas," she stated.
“"Normally, art goes hand in hand with science"
The initiative included a talk by visual artist Alexandre Estrela, selected to represent Portugal at the 2026 Venice Biennale, and a panel discussion on "Synergies between art and Biology: perception of nature," fostering a dialogue that broadens the horizons of Biology and reinforces the importance of interdisciplinarity.
