The exhibition «Traço de fogo», dedicated to Professor Doctor Raquel Soeiro de Brito, opened on October 1st at the Art Space of IGOT-ULisboa, featuring over 200 photographs and slides on volcanic eruptions.

The exhibition «Traço de fogo: vulcões, fotografia e cinema científico no CEG – Homenagem a Raquel Soeiro de Brito», organized by the Phototheca of the Center for Geographical Studies (CEG), opened its doors at the Art Space of IGOT-ULisboa on October 1st. The initiative pays tribute to the research and legacy of Professor Doctor Raquel Soeiro de Brito.
At the inauguration ceremony, which was attended by Professor Doctor Raquel Soeiro de Brito herself, the 4th volume of the Cadernos da Fototeca, titled Traço de Fogo: o filme geocientífico e Raquel Soeiro de Brito (Capelinhos, 1957-1958), was presented. The presentation included the participation of Mário Vale, Eduardo Brito-Henriques, Teresa Firmino, Raquel Melo, Gonçalo Albergaria, and Francisco Roque de Oliveira.
This was followed by the exhibition's inauguration, with speeches by professor José Manuel Simões and artist Gonçalo Albergaria. The exhibition displays over 200 photographs and slides collected by CEG researchers during study missions to the volcanic eruptions of Fogo (1951) and Capelinhos (1957-1958).
The documentary collection also includes excerpts from scientific films made during these missions, which are currently preserved at the National Archive of Moving Images of the Cinemateca Portuguesa-Museu do Cinema. Through these materials, «Traço de fogo» revisits the CEG's scientific work on volcanic eruptions, highlighting the importance of photography and cinema as tools for geographical documentation and research.
The exhibition will be on display at the Art Space of IGOT until November 13, 2026.
