The Amadora/Sintra Local Health Unit (ULS Amadora/Sintra) is marking World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Day on November 18th with an awareness initiative and free screenings at Hospital Fernando Fonseca (HFF).

Under the slogan “COPD: Know. Diagnose. Care.”, the initiative aims to bring the public closer to health professionals, promote respiratory health literacy, and reinforce the importance of early disease identification and preventive measures. COPD is a chronic respiratory disease, often associated with smoking, causing symptoms like shortness of breath, persistent cough, and phlegm, and it remains frequently underdiagnosed.
Throughout the day, three thematic stands will be set up. The first, “Know,” will provide information about COPD and allow participants to complete the CAPTURE questionnaire to identify individuals more likely to have the disease. The second stand, “Diagnose,” will conduct COPD screenings through spirometry to assess respiratory function and raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis.
The third stand, “Care,” will focus on respiratory health prevention and promotion, covering correct inhaler use, smoking cessation, vaccination, and physical exercise. Practical demonstrations will be held, and recommendations will be provided to improve symptom control and the quality of life for those with COPD.
Health professionals will be available to answer questions and encourage the public to take an active role in promoting their respiratory health. ULS Amadora/Sintra invites the community to participate, reinforcing the belief that knowledge helps everyone breathe better.
