On October 26th and 28th, the Green Gym of the Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (MFR) Service and the HFF Stroke Unit hosted activities focused on the importance of rehabilitation after a stroke. On the 27th, actions centered on prevention and screening of risk factors associated with the disease.
At the Green Gym, admitted patients participated in rehabilitation sessions simulating daily tasks, aiming for functional recovery and preparation for post-illness challenges. In the Hospital's atrium, the Stroke 'Game of Glory' invited participants to answer questionnaires, measure blood pressure, and undergo other tests on an interactive course, raising awareness about the disease and identifying risk factors.
The initiative involved multidisciplinary participation from professionals of the Stroke Unit, MFR Service, Social Services, and Nutrition. Topics covered included warning signs, response to an episode, rehabilitation processes, the experience of the disease through the 'In the Stroke Patient's Shoes' activity, life after a stroke, and control of vascular risk factors.
This year, World Stroke Day is held under the global theme of the World Stroke Organization (WSO), 'Every Minute Counts', highlighting the urgency of a rapid response to the first signs of the disease. Stroke continues to be a leading cause of death and disability in Portugal, making prevention, recognition of signs, and rapid access to treatment crucial for improving clinical outcomes.
