The municipalities of Amadora, Lisbon, and Oeiras, in collaboration with CARRIS and TML, have established a cooperation agreement to develop studies and projects for the implementation of a new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, known as Metrobus.

The Amadora Municipal Assembly approved the proposal for the celebration of this Inter-municipal Cooperation Protocol. The initiative, presented by the President of the Amadora Municipal Assembly, Vítor Ferreira, aims to transform mobility in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area with an innovative transport mode, connecting residential and business areas with major public transport hubs.
The dedicated Bus Rapid Transit corridor will utilize 100% electric buses on dedicated lanes. Within Amadora's territory, the project will link the Sintra and Cascais railway lines, offering an alternative to individual transport and addressing the growing travel needs of the population.
The protocol, to be signed soon, will define the bases for institutional, technical, and territorial cooperation for conducting studies and projects supporting the new high-capacity transport line. The goal is to encourage the transition to sustainable urban mobility patterns and strengthen territorial cohesion in the western axis of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
In this initial phase, the focus will be on planning and technical design, including studies on demand, socio-environmental impact, urban integration feasibility, circulation, and traffic, as well as the development of respective preliminary and execution projects.
