The Municipal Assembly of Pombal unanimously approved the Municipal Climate Action Plan (PMAC), an instrument that establishes goals and measures to mitigate and adapt the municipality to the impacts of climate change.

The plan, approved on September 24th, aims to reinforce the Municipality's commitment to building a more resilient and sustainable territory, prepared for challenges such as the recent Storm Kristin. It arises within the framework of the Climate Basic Law and establishes an integrated strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency, and protect natural resources.
Following a public consultation period between June 16th and July 28th, 2026, the document was enriched with contributions from the community and various entities, reflecting a participatory approach. The Municipality of Pombal assumes the responsibility to act in a sustained and responsible manner in the face of contemporary climate challenges.
The PMAC sets goals aligned with national and European objectives, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The diagnosis predicts an increase in average temperature, heatwaves, and intense precipitation in the coming decades, factors that increase the vulnerability of the territory, water resources, forests, agriculture, biodiversity, and public health.
The document integrates mitigation and adaptation measures across sectors such as buildings, transport, industry, agriculture, forests, biodiversity, coastal zones, and human health. Highlights include promoting energy efficiency, renewable energies, mobility electrification, creating ecological corridors, and protecting wetlands.
The plan also includes the valorization of areas of environmental interest such as the Bioparque da Charneca, ecological corridors and wetlands of the Mata Nacional do Urso, and areas of the Maciço de Sicó within Natura 2000 Network. Implementation will be monitored through continuous monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, involving public, private entities, and the local community.
