The distinction, reflecting the preference of Portuguese people among 216 competing river beaches and bathing areas, places Valhelhas at the top, with Aldeia Viçosa River Beach reaching 12th place and Quinta da Taberna-Videmonte River Beach securing 23rd.
The Municipality of Guarda highlights that this recognition mirrors the continuous work and investment in valuing and qualifying these spaces, with a strong focus on nature tourism. Interventions have led to the requalification of areas and improved usability conditions, enhancing the tourist potential and economic impact on the territory. The Municipality has also borne additional costs for repairing damage caused by recent storms, without external co-funding.
Valhelhas River Beach, bathed by the clear waters of the Zêzere River, offers a picnic area, sports field, playground, lawn, water access ramp, support bars, changing rooms, bathrooms, and a first-aid station. It has a lifeguard during the bathing season and holds the accessible beach, Gold Quality Water, and Blue Flag seals for 18 consecutive years.
The "River Beach of the Year 2026" podium was completed by Loriga River Beach in 2nd place and Albufeira da Tapada Grande River Beach in 3rd place. The direct vote by bathers awarded water quality, infrastructure, and natural richness, underscoring the importance of these leisure spaces for regional tourism and local economies.
