The Lagos Municipal Assembly is organizing a Public Commemorative Session on October 31, 2026, to mark the 90th Anniversary of the opening of the Tarrafal Concentration Camp, honoring political prisoners and victims of fascist repression.

The initiative, approved in June 2026, will take place in the Noble Hall of the Old Municipal Buildings, in Praça Gil Eanes, Lagos, at 3:00 PM. The event aims to mark the 90th anniversary of the camp's inauguration in October 1936.
The session will feature participation from José Pedro Soares, representative of the Union of Portuguese Anti-Fascist Resistance Fighters (URAP), who accepted the invitation to speak at this commemoration.
This initiative holds particular significance for the Municipality of Lagos, as among the first political prisoners sent to Tarrafal was Joaquim Marreiros, a native of Bensafrim. Following his participation in the Sailors' Revolt in September 1936, he was sent to the camp, where he died in 1948 after twelve years of captivity.
Through this session, the Lagos Municipal Assembly aims to preserve historical memory, value the anti-fascist resistance, and transmit knowledge about this period of Portuguese History to new generations, reaffirming the values of freedom, democracy, and human rights.
