The Municipality of Lagoa achieved a 27% bio-waste capture rate in 2025, exceeding the established 26% target and securing approximately €104,000 in reimbursement.
In 2025, Lagoa collected a total of 2,574 tons of bio-waste, comprising 486 tons of food waste and 2,088 tons of green waste. This performance marks the second consecutive year the municipality has met its collection and valorization goals set by the Urban Waste Strategic Plan Action Plan (PAPERSU).
Food waste collection is managed by the LAGOA VALORIZA+ project, operating through two channels: the Horeca channel, targeting large producers like hotels, restaurants, and schools, and the Proximity channel for households. Green waste, primarily from garden maintenance, can be deposited at the Waste Disposal Center – Espaço Cerca da Lapa.
The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) confirmed that the collected amount allowed Lagoa to reach a 27% capture rate, one percentage point above the annual objective.
“
"The results achieved demonstrate the positive impact of the work being developed by the Municipality, in coordination with citizens, businesses, and institutions of the county. Exceeding the target set for 2025 is a cause for satisfaction and confirms that Lagoa is on the right path in promoting more sustainable waste management."
As a result of meeting the target, the Municipality of Lagoa will receive a reimbursement of approximately €104,000 for the Waste Management Fee (TGR) paid in 2025 to ALGAR. This outcome represents both an environmental and financial benefit, reflecting the growing participation in selective bio-waste collection systems.
“
"This result shows that good environmental practices have concrete consequences. Every citizen, business, or institution that correctly separates its bio-waste contributes to meeting environmental goals and, in this case, also to reducing the costs borne by the Municipality."
The Municipality of Lagoa encourages continued participation from residents in the LAGOA VALORIZA+ project to enhance the valorization of organic waste.
