The Municipality of Castro Marim has announced the commencement of renovation works at the pier, located within the Sapal Natural Reserve of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António. The project, funded by an approved application, involves replacing six support spaces for fishermen, which are currently in an advanced state of disrepair, thereby promoting the sustainability of an ancestral practice of significant economic and cultural importance for the municipality and the Algarve region.
Rehabilitation and painting works will be carried out on the surrounding walls, and to make the space more pleasant, benches made from recycled plastic will be installed, promoting circularity and providing a resting area. The intervention also includes the implementation of LED luminaires with solar panels, in accordance with the technical specifications defined by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests, to minimize disturbances to the avifauna of the reserve.
In the future, the intention is to introduce canoeing at this location, integrated into the Municipality's educational program. This application also includes the rehabilitation of a warehouse in the salt pans and the modernization of the Interpretation Centre of the Territory of Revelim de Santo António.
The total investment amounts to €683,599.01, with an eligible investment of €594,175.47 and a maximum FEDER co-financing rate of 60% of the total eligible expenses, as part of the application for Biosphere Reserve status for the Natural Reserve.
