The publication, edited by Edições Colibri and the Municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, is the result of archaeological research by Rui Mataloto, an archaeologist from the Câmara Municipal of Redondo, and André Pereira, Science Manager at the Centre for Archaeology of the University of Lisbon. The work highlights the wealth and heritage density of the municipality, one of the most studied by Portuguese Archaeology.
The presentation is part of the European Heritage Days, an event promoted by the Council of Europe and the European Commission. The Archaeological Charter, which revives the expression “de tempore antico” from the 1276 Foral of Monsaraz, aims to integrate rigorous archaeological information into the Municipal Master Plan and support heritage safeguarding.
The document serves as a repository of decades of research, bringing the archaeological past closer to citizens. For its creation, over 4,500 archaeological entries were reviewed, more than 1,500 kilometers were walked through the municipality, and over 300 hours were dedicated to information processing.
The inventory documents human occupation from the Paleolithic to the Medieval and Modern periods, with a focus on the prehistoric landscape and over a hundred megalithic monuments, including the Archaeological Complex of Perdigões.
