The Order of Pharmacists has joined other Health Professional Orders in a joint commitment to place the health and well-being of sector workers among the priorities of healthcare system governance.

The commitment was made on October 9th in Coimbra and will be formalized by subscribing to the Coimbra Declaration 2026: Professional Health in Healthcare System Governance. The document argues that professional well-being should be considered in decisions regarding the quality and sustainability of healthcare organizations and systems.
The initiative, originating from the Order of Portuguese Psychologists with support from the Local Health Unit of Coimbra, aims to place the sustainability of people at the core of discussions about healthcare systems. OPP President Sofia Ramalho highlighted the ability of different professions to unite around a common responsibility.
For pharmacists, this issue carries significant weight, as they are on the front lines daily in community pharmacies, hospitals, clinical analysis labs, and the industry, often facing demanding workloads and reduced teams. Caring for those who care is also a condition for ensuring the quality of care provided to the population.
The Declaration is also subscribed to by the Order of Social Workers, the Order of Biologists, the Order of Nurses, the Order of Pharmacists, the Order of Physiotherapists, the Order of Physicians, the Order of Dental Physicians, the Order of Veterinary Physicians, and the Order of Nutritionists.
