The lecturer was elected to the position last Saturday, September 26, 2026, during the federation's general assembly, which took place in Chiba, Japan, as part of the 36th World Congress of Biomedical Laboratory Science. The IFBLS brings together national associations from 38 countries, representing over 240,000 professionals in the field worldwide.
Fernando Mendes joins the structure representing the Portuguese Association of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists (BioMedLab). During his two-year term (2026-28), he will participate in the federation's board meetings and work within the scientific and membership committees, with responsibilities in planning webinars, editing the IFBLS "Journal", and reviewing applications from new members.
Fernando Mendes has also served as president of the European Association for Professionals in Biomedical Science (EPBS) since 2018. He holds a PhD in Health Sciences from the University of Coimbra and has been teaching at ESTeSC since 2008, currently serving as President of the School's Technical-Scientific Council.
