The NRP Figueira da Foz rescued a sailor who abandoned his vessel in distress about 2.5 miles offshore, northwest of Cabo da Roca, following a fire on board.

The alert was given by the sailor himself, around 11:45 PM on October 5th, via 112, reporting that he had abandoned the vessel due to a fire. Subsequently, MRCC Lisbon initiated a Search and Rescue operation, directing the Ocean Patrol Vessel NRP Figueira da Foz to the area.
Upon arrival in the vicinity of the reported position, the sailboat was located. A semi-rigid boat from the vessel, with three military personnel, boarded and confirmed that no one was on board and that a fire had occurred inside.
During searches in the vicinity, the sailor was located in a small auxiliary boat. He was promptly rescued onto the NRP Figueira da Foz, where he was attended by the health team. It was determined that he was well and required no further specialized treatment.
The sailor was later transported ashore by a vessel from the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos. The NRP Figueira da Foz, with a crew of 40 military personnel and 2 trainees, is currently on a mission in the Exclusive Economic Zone of mainland Portugal.
