The "Mãos Sábias" project aims to showcase knowledge, techniques, and practices that are integral to the identity and memory of the Figueira da Foz community. The program covers three main areas: Portuguese Artistic Pavement, Textile Arts, and Azulejaria (Tilework), involving artists, artisans, and researchers to promote knowledge transfer.
The program includes the exhibition «Geometries of Stone | Portuguese Pavement in Figueira da Foz», running until January next year at the MMSR, and a series of practical workshops. The first workshop, focused on artistic pavement, was led by visual artist Hamilton Francisco (Babu) and aimed at the school community, in partnership with the National Arts Plan (PNA).
The next initiative is the workshop «Tecendo Horizontes Sensoriais» (Weaving Sensory Horizons), dedicated to textile arts, with a special focus on the Tavira Tapestry (1776–2026), a Baroque artwork celebrating its 250th anniversary and a prominent piece in the Museum since 1894. This commemoration aims to value knowledge at risk of disappearing.
The workshop «Tecendo Horizontes Sensoriais», led by resident artist Odete Sousa, invites the general and senior community to explore textile arts inspired by the Tavira Tapestry. Sessions are held on Thursdays, from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, resulting in a collective artwork to be exhibited at the museum, promoting accessibility and sensory experience.
The initiatives of the "Mãos Sábias" project are free and take place at the Municipal Museum Santos Rocha, with prior registration required. Further information is available on the social media channels of the Municipality and the Municipal Museum Santos Rocha.
