Cantanhede Municipal Civil Protection has registered and treated over 500 nests of the Asian hornet this year, with a significant increase since August, coinciding with the olive harvesting season.

From January 1st to October 1st, 2026, the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Cantanhede has registered and treated over 500 nests of Vespa velutina (Asian hornet). Approximately 250 of these nests were registered since August 1st, a period that has seen an increase in hornet activity and sightings, particularly near olive groves.
With the start of the olive harvesting season, the Municipal Civil Protection recommends paying special attention to olive groves. It is advisable to visually inspect each olive tree before starting work, checking for the possible presence of nests in the branches or inside the trunk.
If a nest is detected, the recommendation is not to approach or interfere with it, and not to attempt its removal or elimination by oneself. Reporting nest sightings to the Municipal Civil Protection is crucial for them to validate and carry out the necessary neutralization intervention.
Sightings of Vespa velutina nests can be reported to the Municipal Civil Protection of Cantanhede by calling 231 423 818, Monday to Friday, between 09:00 and 17:00, or by emailing proteccao.civil@cm-cantanhede.pt.
In case of a sting with a severe reaction or concerning symptoms, call 112.
Prevention begins with attention: before starting to harvest olives, observe the trees first.
