The Ribeira Grande Municipal Council marked the International Day of Older Persons with an initiative that gathered over 200 senior citizens from the municipality, users of various day centres.

The event, organised by the municipality's Division of Social Action, Education, and Health Promotion (DASEPS), took place at Largo Conselheiro Hintze Ribeiro. It offered an afternoon of socialising and active participation with a diverse programme, including presentations, workshops, traditional games, leisure and recreational activities, reading moments, entertainment, physical activity, and relaxation.
Actions promoting health, self-care, inclusion, and non-discrimination were also addressed. The Public Security Police, the Ribeira Grande Volunteer Firefighters, and professionals from the local Health Centre participated with demonstrations and awareness-raising on health and safety.
The organisation was supported by the Novo Dia Association, the Daniel de Sá Municipal Library, and DASEPS technicians. The Mayor, Jaime Vieira, was present, greeted the participants, and attended part of the programme.
Jaime Vieira reaffirmed the Municipality's commitment to developing policies for the senior population, promoting active and healthy ageing, and enhancing the conditions for their inclusion, autonomy, well-being, and quality of life.
The Municipality believes that valuing seniors involves creating opportunities for social participation, recognising their role and the importance of their experience for a more inclusive society. The commemoration was a moment of closeness and social interaction for the over 200 participants.
