Aboim, the northernmost parish in the municipality of Fafe, with around 400 inhabitants, is establishing itself as a tourist destination, noted for its hiking trails and rural heritage. The village is known for its five surrounding mountains: Marão, Gerês, Cabreira, Serra de Agra, and Maroiço.
One of the village's landmarks is a windmill with unique features, built in the early 20th century, between 1923 and 1926. The Parish Council, with the support of the Fafe Municipal Council and the Leader project, has restored it using traditional materials and techniques. After a year of work by the company Etnoideia, responsible for research, design, and reconstruction, and with the involvement of the local community, the memories associated with the windmill have been preserved.
Since 2007, the windmill has been part of the Portuguese Network of Windmills and the International Molinology Society. To complement the theme of the village's uses and customs, the Interpretive Centre – Mountain and Rye Educational Village was created, housed in the former primary school of Aboim. This interactive space offers mini-exploratories and workshops, allowing visitors to learn, relive, and remember local traditions.
