The Local Health Unit of Baixo Alentejo (ULSBA), in partnership with Eurest Portugal and Associação ESTAR, has signed a cooperation protocol aimed at reducing food waste and supporting families facing hardship in the community. The agreement will enable the daily collection of surplus food, which will be distributed by Associação ESTAR to those most in need.
The formalization of this protocol, which took place on September 29th, the date marking the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, represents a significant step in social responsibility for ULSBA and Eurest. The initiative stemmed from the fundamental question: "If we have surplus food in adequate condition for consumption, why should it end up as waste when it can reach those who need it?"
This International Day serves as a reminder that food waste transcends the environmental sphere, also presenting itself as a social, economic, and responsible resource use challenge. Within a public institution, the responsibility inherent in this cause takes on an even greater dimension.
