Thirteen schools in the municipality of Mealhada have received the Green Flag Eco-Schools 2025-26 award, at an event in Sintra that recognizes commitment to environmental education and sustainability.

The municipality of Mealhada has seen thirteen schools honored with the Green Flag Eco-Schools 2025-26, acknowledging their work in environmental education and sustainable development throughout the academic year. The award ceremony took place this Wednesday, October 8th, in Sintra, at Air Base No. 1, during the Green Flags Day – Eco-Schools Award 2026.
A delegation of 40 individuals, including students representing the distinguished educational establishments, marked Mealhada's presence at the event. This initiative underscores the municipality's commitment to fostering a more conscious and sustainable community.
Among the awarded schools are the kindergartens of Antes, Carqueijo, Canedo, Pampilhosa, and Quinta do Valongo, the Kindergarten of Sant’Ana, EB1 of Antes, EB1 of Casal Comba, the School Center of Mealhada, the School Center of Luso, the School Center of Pampilhosa, EB2 of Mealhada, and the Parish Assistance Center of Pampilhosa.
The Councilor for Environment and Education, Nuno Veiga, highlighted the importance of the Eco-Schools Program as a tool for education and participation. "It is essential to involve young people in building a more sustainable school and community. To achieve this, it is crucial to ensure children and young people participate in decision-making and in these types of programs," he stated.
The councilor added that the Green Flag represents, for the municipality, "the result of continuous work and a responsibility to continue deepening sustainable practices, involving the entire educational community".
The Eco-Schools Program, internationally promoted by the Foundation for Environmental Education, is present in 82 countries. In Portugal, it is coordinated by the Blue Flag Association for Environment and Education (ABAAE), which views the Green Flag as a symbol of schools' commitment to education for sustainable development.
