The Municipality of Mealhada has once again been distinguished with the “Viver em Igualdade” Award, presented by the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality (CIG), maintaining the “Municipality of Excellence for Living in Equality” seal for the second consecutive year.
The distinction, part of the 8th edition of the award, recognizes municipalities that stand out for their good practices in integrating the gender perspective into governance and territory, promoting equality, citizenship, and non-discrimination. Mealhada was recognized for a diverse set of initiatives aimed at the community, schools, and municipal services.
Among the actions developed are the traveling exhibition “Equality through the Lens of the Mobile Phone”, the painting of the “Equality Mural” by young students, the activity “Mismatched Professions” to deconstruct gender stereotypes, and awareness-raising actions on domestic violence, dating violence, and human trafficking.
The municipality also promoted inclusion and diversity initiatives, such as raising the LGBTQIA+ flag, Portuguese Sign Language awareness sessions for young people, and sign language interpretation of a concert at FAG. Measures for the inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace and free adapted physical activity programs were also highlighted.
In this edition, 57 municipalities—56 city councils and one parish council—were distinguished for their work in promoting inclusive policies and practices. The award ceremony is scheduled for October 26, at the Casa da Música in Porto.
The Viver em Igualdade Award is a biennial initiative of the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality (CIG), part of the National Strategy for Equality and Non-Discrimination 2018-2030 – Portugal + Igual.
