The Maritime Museum of Ílhavo hosted the 10th National Metrology Meeting, which brought together around 120 participants on November 3rd and 4th, under the theme «Measure well to decide better».

The Portuguese Quality Institute (IPQ) was present at the event, organized by the Portuguese Society of Metrology (SPMet) in collaboration with RELACRE and the Municipal Chamber of Ílhavo. The meeting promoted knowledge sharing and reflection on current metrology challenges.
The scientific program addressed topics such as measurements in the oceanic environment, the application of artificial intelligence to electronic microscopy, the modernization of mass and time domains, digital calibration certificates, and metrological traceability in clinical laboratories.
IPQ was represented by five selected scientific communications and one invited communication by Isabel Godinho, Director of IPQ's Metrology Department. Three posters were also presented.
Elsa Batista and Oliver Pellegrino, members of the SPMet Board, were part of the organizing committee. Representing IPQ were Carlos Pires, Florbela Dias, and Francisco Seco.
At the closing session, Maria João Graça, a member of IPQ's Board, highlighted the importance of Metrology as an essential infrastructure for society, business competitiveness, innovation, consumer protection, and public policies. She emphasized that the quality of decisions depends on the information they are based on, and that a measurement only gains full meaning when its result is technically supported and comparable.
She also highlighted IPQ's role, as the National Metrology Institution, in developing national standards, promoting metrological traceability, and ensuring confidence in measurement results. Digital transformation, artificial intelligence, process automation, sustainability, and energy transition were identified as challenges requiring continuously evolving Metrology.
Holding the Meeting at the Maritime Museum of Ílhavo, in the Cod Aquarium, also provided a particularly relevant context for reflecting on the application of Metrology to different realities, notably measurements in the oceanic environment and the metrological control of the Cod Aquarium's conditions.
