Mayor Catarina Cabeceiras, accompanied by Councillor Jorge Almeida, head of the Municipal Toponymy Commission, participated in a hearing of the Permanent Specialized Committee on Economy of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores. The meeting focused on Petition n.º 36/XIII/2.ª, concerning the improvement of the Universal Postal Distribution Service on the island of São Jorge.
During the hearing, the main concerns regarding postal distribution in the municipality of Velas were presented. The urgent need for a more effective response, tailored to the specific local realities, was highlighted. The municipality has been closely monitoring this issue, maintaining close coordination with postal service managers on the island.
Following a period of human resource shortages, the postal distribution team for the municipality has been reinforced. It currently comprises three postmen, which has helped normalize the service and gradually address pending issues.
Concurrently, the process of toponymy regularization across all parishes in the municipality is ongoing, in collaboration with the respective Parish Councils. According to the mayor, missing identification plates have been ordered, allowing this territorial organization and update process to continue.
It is anticipated that by the end of the year, the necessary procedures for updating the postal codes of the various parishes within the municipality will be completed. This initiative aims to enhance territorial organization and improve the efficiency of the postal service provided to the population of Velas.
