The Museum of Azorean Emigration, located in Ribeira Grande, hosted the inauguration of the exhibition “By Sea”. This exhibition, a creation by Andrea Santolaya, is part of the programming for Ponta Delgada 26 – Portuguese Capital of Culture.
On the occasion, the councilor of the Ribeira Grande Municipal Chamber, Miguel Bernardo, highlighted the significance of hosting the exhibition in a space dedicated to preserving the memory and stories of Azoreans who emigrated. The initiative is part of the Cultural Plan of the Integrated Basic School of Rabo de Peixe – “By Seas and Metropolises” –, also involving the Professional School of Ribeira Grande.
The exhibition proposes a reflection on the journeys that have shaped contemporary Azorean identity. Miguel Bernardo emphasized Ribeira Grande's strong connection with the sea, a crucial element for fishing, tourism, leisure, and sports like surfing and bodyboarding.
"The sea was, for centuries, a path of departure and arrival", stated the councilor, highlighting its role in projecting Ribeira Grande as a territory open to the world. Bernardo congratulated the author, the schools, and everyone involved, inviting the public to visit the exhibition and the Museum of Azorean Emigration.
