António Garcia Pereira has been unanimously appointed the new Commander of the Volunteer Firefighters Association of Ribeira Grande, taking up his duties in January 2027.

The Municipal Council of Ribeira Grande congratulates António Garcia Pereira on his appointment as the new Commander of the Fire Department of the Humanitarian Association of the Volunteer Firefighters of Ribeira Grande. Garcia Pereira will succeed José Nuno Melo Moniz, whose term ends at the end of December due to retirement.
The appointment, approved at a General Assembly of the Humanitarian Association, recognizes António Garcia Pereira's career within the corps. He joined the Ribeira Grande Volunteer Firefighters in March 2011 as a Cadet, is a 2nd Class Firefighter, and has been an employee of the Association since 2016. He is also a trainer for the Regional Civil Protection and Firefighters Service of the Azores and for the corps, having distinguished himself through his focus on training and operational preparedness of firefighters. He was also an initiator and responsible for organizing the two editions of “Bombeiro Grandense”.
The Municipal Council believes that the choice of António Garcia Pereira represents a commitment to continuity, renewal, and the enhancement of the institution's staff, wishing him success in the highly responsible mission he will undertake at the beginning of next year.
In this transition period, the Municipality also expresses its deep recognition and gratitude to Commander José Nuno Melo Moniz, who concludes a career of over 40 years dedicated to the Volunteer Firefighters of Ribeira Grande and to the protection and rescue of the populations. José Nuno Melo Moniz joined the corps in 1984 and took command in July 2013, distinguishing himself through training, specialization, leadership, and dedication to the cause of firefighters.
