Clube União Micaelense and its athlete Martim Sousa were honored by the Ponta Delgada Municipal Chamber following their outstanding performance at the 2026 National Beach Tennis Championship, held at Praia de Matosinhos.
Martim Sousa secured the title of National Champion in Mixed Doubles, partnering with Marta Magalhães. Additionally, he achieved the title of National Runner-up in Men's Doubles, alongside his brother, Miguel Sousa, demonstrating his prominence in the sport nationally.
The Mayor of Ponta Delgada, Pedro Nascimento Cabral, highlighted the pride of the municipality and the Azores in Martim Sousa's results, emphasizing his talent and dedication. "The results achieved by Martim Sousa are a source of pride for Ponta Delgada and the Azores. Winning the national title and the runner-up title demonstrates the talent, dedication, and competitive ability of an athlete who has been establishing himself in beach tennis at a national level," he stated.
The mayor also underscored the work of Clube União Micaelense, including its coaches, directors, and technical team, in developing the sport and valuing its athletes. "These results also reflect the work developed by Clube União Micaelense, its coaches, directors, and technical team, who have contributed to the growth of the sport and the valorization of its athletes," he added.
The competition also saw victories for the club in the +40 category, with Marisa Santos and Sandra Gamboa winning in the women's doubles, and Carolina Queiroz and João Queiroz in the +40 Mixed Doubles. These achievements consolidate the club's presence on the national stage and promote Azorean beach tennis.
The vote of congratulation acknowledges the collective effort, including coaches, directors, and the technical team, and emphasizes the importance of local clubs in promoting sports and training athletes, thereby projecting the name of Ponta Delgada and the Azores.
